Course Structure

The University of Westminster is a leader in the study of the media with a top-rated department that scores highly for both its teaching quality and research.

The undergraduate Media Studies programme now consists of four separate courses, all with their own practice elements, while they share a common ‘spine’ of analysis and theoretical teaching. The four courses are: Radio Production, Broadcast Television Production, Journalism, Public Relations

The concept behind Radio Production is to give students a thorough grounding in a range of production techniques, genres and formats. These divide into pre-recorded or ‘built' radio (such as packages, features, podcasts and web audio) and ‘live' radio (including news, magazine and music programmes).

In the course of three years, students get the opportunity to learn many different skills which are essential in radio, such as recording, editing, mixing, desk operation and the roles that are associated with them: researcher, producer, editor, newsreader, reporter and presenter/DJ
.

Applications

In terms of applicants, we're looking for students who can demonstrate a passion for radio and an interest in the media in general. Evidence of work experience in the industry is obviously a plus, although we appreciate that not every student has the opportunity to take a media-related qualification at A' Level or equivalent. Applicants who are predicted to attain our minimum entry requirements are invited for interview, and on that basis we make offers of places. Please note, we very rarely make offers without meeting candidates: it's an opportunity for us to meet you and for you to see our facilities and the campus and to decide whether this is the right place for you.
